The park sets the start of the Teton Park Road's car-free season to the day, but snow decides when the bike weeks end. This November there's an extra wrinkle. The stretch most people use to reach the road starts at a Moose Entrance Station that is still under construction, with work scheduled to continue until the middle of the month.
That means two timelines run at once this fall. The park's dates control access at the Moose end, and the weather controls the road itself. The first half of November falls under both.
One Fixed Date and One That Moves
Grand Teton National Park closes the Teton Park Road to vehicles every year from November 1 to April 30, between Taggart Lake Trailhead and Signal Mountain Lodge. The Grand Teton National Park Foundation's 2026 seasonal notice confirms that this year's vehicle closure starts November 1, 2026. It also says the road stays open to cyclists, pedestrians, and leashed dogs until there's enough snow to start grooming, usually in mid-December.
The real deadline isn't grooming, though. It's the first snow that covers the road. The park's road rules change the moment that happens:
- From November 1 until the road is snow-covered: You can bike, hike, run, rollerblade, or walk your dog.
- After the road is snow-covered: Bikes, snow bikes, fat-tire bikes, and rollerblades are not allowed.
- Leashed pets: Allowed on the road after November 1. Once snow covers it, they move to the multi-use lane.
- Mid-December to mid-March: The road is groomed for skiing, snowshoeing, and hiking.
The bike season can be short or long. In an April photo story, Buckrail wrote that "it seems like just yesterday cyclists were celebrating a late start to winter by pedaling on Teton Park Road at the end of November." A late winter can stretch the bike weeks to the end of the month. An early storm can end them in the first week.
The Foundation says it will pay for winter grooming again this year, and grooming should start in mid-December if snow allows. That covers the ski season. The bike season comes before it, and its length depends on the weather.
The Moose End Is Still a Work Zone Until November 15
Most people from Moose, Kelly, or town get to the Teton Park Road through the Moose Entrance Station. That's where the park is building the Teton Park Road Roundabout, just north of the entrance station at the junction of Menor's Ferry Road and the Teton Park Road. Once it's done, northbound traffic from the Moose-Wilson Road will be able to continue onto the Teton Park Road without going through a second entrance station. The project runs from May 2026 to June 2027. The park's 2026 schedule calls for delays of up to 20 minutes through November 15, not counting the wait at the entrance station. As of October 9, a temporary detour to keep traffic moving through the next stages of the work was nearly finished.
The road also loses its main visitor services the day before it opens to bikes. The Craig Thomas Discovery and Visitor Center in Moose closes for the season on October 31, 2026. Jenny Lake Visitor Center already closed on October 12.
Here's how the dates that matter at the south end line up:
| Date | What changes |
|---|---|
| Saturday, October 31 | Craig Thomas Discovery and Visitor Center closes for the season |
| Sunday, November 1 | Teton Park Road closes to vehicles from Taggart Lake Trailhead to Signal Mountain Lodge; bikes, walkers, and leashed dogs allowed |
| Through November 15 | Roundabout delays of up to 20 minutes at the Moose Entrance Station |
| Through November 15 | Moose-Wilson Road between the LSR Preserve and Moose stays closed for construction |
| Mid-November, conditions permitting | Moose-Wilson Road shifts to winter recreation use between Moose and Death Canyon Junction |
| Mid-December, snow permitting | Grooming begins on the Teton Park Road |
So the first two weeks of bike season, the only ones you can count on before the weather turns, overlap with the construction delays. If you wait until the delays end on November 15, you're betting the snow holds off.
Mid-November Changes More Than the Traffic
The Moose-Wilson Road is scheduled to change over at about the same time the roundabout delays end. The stretch between the Laurance S. Rockefeller Preserve and Moose has been closed to cars and bikes since September for construction, with the closure set to run through November 15. After that, the August 20 park release says the corridor will switch to winter recreation use as conditions allow. The Foundation's notice says winter access between Moose and Death Canyon Junction begins November 15, 2026. Because the park ties the change to conditions, check its current conditions page before heading out that weekend. In winter, the park keeps the Moose-Wilson Road open for skiing, snowshoeing, and hiking.
Once that happens, two car-free routes meet at Moose. The Moose-Wilson side has a limit. Death Canyon Road and the Death Canyon Trailhead stay closed for construction for all of 2026. The trailhead is moving about a mile, and the old road beyond it will become an extension of the Valley Trail.
Starting From Taggart Lake Trailhead
The car-free section starts at Taggart Lake Trailhead, and the trailhead lot is still open during its own construction. The park expects the work to bring a redesigned trailhead with restrooms, a water bottle filling station, and a bigger parking lot. Cottonwood Creek picnic area closed for construction in mid-August.
If you plan to walk to the lake instead of along the road, the northern part of the Taggart Lake Trail is still closed for reconstruction. You can still reach the lake on the southern route, which is longer and steeper at about 4.25 miles round trip.
The park's winter visitor page lists restrooms or portable toilets at both Taggart Lake Trailhead and Dornan's. Bears are active throughout the park, and the bear safety guidance recommends carrying bear spray everywhere, where you can grab it quickly, not packed away. That's especially relevant on a quiet road in early November.
Coming in on foot or by bike requires a pass too. The park's fees page lists a $20, seven-day per-person pass for anyone 16 or older entering on foot, bicycle, or ski. Children under 16 don't need one. Pass terms can change, so check that page for current requirements before you go.
Dornan's Is the Base That Stays Open
At the south end, Dornan's in Moose stays open after most of the park's concessions close. The Pizza & Pasta Co. says it serves lunch and dinner year-round. The Trading Post lists 24-hour gas and rents snowshoes and cross-country skis in winter, which helps once the road changes from bike route to groomed track. The Wine Shop advertises winter wine dinners and tastings. None of these pages lists November hours, so it's worth calling ahead before you plan a ride around lunch.
The north end has no services. Signal Mountain Lodge, where the car-free section ends, closed for the season on October 11. Jackson Lake Lodge and Jenny Lake Lodge closed on October 4.
If You're Coming From Moran
If you live near Moran, the trip to the north end has its own construction. Crews are working on US Highway 26/89/191 just south of Moran Junction, near where the Snake River meets the Buffalo Fork, to stabilize a roadbed that has been eroding. The work runs from October through December 2026. A temporary signal controls one lane of alternating traffic, with delays of about 20 minutes in each direction. Secondary roads such as Antelope Flats, Deadmans Bar, Pilgrim Creek, Schwabacher, and Two Ocean close each season based on conditions, with no fixed date.
The plan for November depends on the weather. The road is open to bikes, boots, and leashed dogs from November 1 until the first snow that covers it, the Moose roundabout delays are scheduled to end November 15, and grooming should begin in mid-December.
For people who live north of Jackson, having this road out the back door is part of what makes the area home. If you want to understand how being near the park, the Moose entrance, or the Moran corridor affects a property's value, Ray Pawlikowski and the VYSTA team can walk you through it.
